Alex Jaeger is an American art director and costume designer with Industrial Light and Magic.[1][2] He was the visual effects art director for Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.
Biography[]
Jaeger attended the Center for Creature Studies College of Art & Design in Detroit for two years where he focused on transportation design. He later attended the Art Institute of Pittsburgh and studied stop-motion and computer animation and industrial design.[3]
Jaeger went to work for Fry's Electronics stores, where he designed three toys for Christiansen Design in Sausalito, California. He also worked for R. Talsorian Games, where he created various designs and illustrations for a series of “Cyberpunk” role-playing books.[3]
In 1995, Jaeger joined Industrial Light and Magic, where he worked primarily within the creature and model shops as a model maker for multiple projects. In addition, he worked as a storyboard artist for the Art Department until 1996. That same year he was made Visual Effects Art Director and ship designer on the film Star Trek: First Contact. Several of his spaceships designs were later used in Star Trek: The Next Generation.[3]
Jaeger is one of the key production members responsible for the visual effects in the Michael Bay Transformers film franchise. During the production of Pacific Rim, he earned the nickname “Jaeger Master.”[3]
Alex Jaeger is the recipient of the 2013 Ovation Award for costume design in The Nether[4] and works in the San Francisco branch of Industrial Light and Magic.
