''Pacific Rim: The Black'' premiered yesterday to no fanare on Netflix. Now that's been available for a couple hours, what are your thoughts on the series so far? Are you looking forward to a second season, or is this dead in the water?
For me the pros and cons are thus:
PROS:
*The show worked best when it wasn't referencing or call-backing the films. An isolated story focusing on two siblings, basically, is why most of The Black worked.
*Most of the English voice acting is solid and consistent.
*Of all the Kaiju designs, Copperhead's design worked for me the most.
*The show remembered the PPDC gave officers serial numbers.
*Joel Wyrick and Loa might be my favorite characters from the show tbh.
*The improv comedy hour with John Boyega and co. is wholly absent from the series, which is a relief.
CONS:
*The series wasted too much time on the Bogan characters
*Mei's entire backstory is info-dumped in one episode (when it could've been revealed across the season or the next), and I'm still wondering why I should I care.
*The only Australians of note are pretty much bland, "comically evil", antagonistic/villains
*Most of the central Jaegers, primarily Atlas Destroyer, resemble Gipsy Danger or Striker Eureka's silhouette too much to be unique (which highlights why del Toro telling his concept artists not to copy/paste from pre-existing designs was a good thing).
*In other words, on top of Atlas Destroyer's vomit color, the Jaeger designs are just flat and boring.
*The Kaiju Boy is just unnecessary anime fodder in a pseudo-anime series.
*Too much of the Drift/Conn-Pod philosophy is lifted from Uprising, unfortunately.
