Brawler Yukon, also called "The Prototype", is a Mark-1 Jaeger and the first to be built. Initially it was made only for testing, but ended up being taken to real combat which made it an active participant in the Kaiju War.

History[]

The Jaeger Project[]

Brawler Yukon was constructed on Kodiak Island, Alaska and designed by Dr. Jasper Schoenfeld and Caitlin Lightcap. Its first demo is performed by USAF Captain Adam Casey on January 30, 2015.[1]

Adam is unable to control the mech and suffers a seizure during the procedure. He loses control of the Jaeger, which crashes to the ground. His death makes Dr. Lightcap uncertain about using the next candidate, Lieutenant Sergio D'Onofrio.

Sergio pilots Brawler Yukon in the next demonstration, February 18, 2015. Sergio manages to make the Jaeger walk, but the neural load is again too much for his brain and triggers a seizure. Caitlin, who theorizes one mind controlling the entire Jaeger is too much, uses the pons bridge to connect with Sergio. Her efforts create the first Drift. The demonstration is a success and the higher-ups of the Pan Pacific Defense Corps move to authorize the Jaeger Program.[1]

Humanity's Counterattack[]

On April 23, 2015, months before the Mark-1s were to be launched, the Category I Kaiju Karloff emerges from the Breach and attacks Vancouver, forcing the PPDC to deploy Brawler Yukon into combat.[1]

The Prototype is released into the city by helicopters and comes face to face with the Kaiju, who immediately charges towards it but is thrown back by an uppercut from the Jaeger, which stuns it and forces it to hold onto buildings to keep from falling. Before the creature can even recover, the Jaeger fires its missiles at it, stunning it even further and covering the area with smoke, which allows Brawler Yukon to reach Karloff unnoticed and grab the Kaiju by the neck, punching it in the face and finally killing it.[1]

Tales From The Drift[]

At an undetermined time, Brawler Yukon is deployed against the Kaiju Kame-san, who emerged from the Breach near the coastline of an undisclosed city.[7] Brawler attacks Kame-san, distracting the Kaiju from Kaori Koyamada and Duc Jessop.[7]

During Brawler Yukon's fight with Kame-san, the Jaeger is thrown against the support pillars of a bridge and damages it.[8] Kaori, Duc, and another PPDC member use what remains of the PPDC submersible to keep the bridge's pillar from collapsing under its own weight, and Brawler Yukon defeats Kame-san.[8]

The Battle of the Yukon[]

On March 13, 2018, Brawler Yukon is deployed to Vancouver[note 1] a second time to engage the Category I Kaiju Hammerjaw, which had already made landfall.[5]

The Jaeger is released by the helicopters half a mile away into the city and faces the Kaiju, which begins a high-speed charging attack against the Mark-1, but is unsuccessful as the pilots quickly brace for the impact and manage to hold the monster back, immediately retaliating with blows to the creature's triple jaws and an uppercut, leaving the enemy stunned.[5]

Now on the offensive, Brawler Yukon ducks its head like a linebacker and pushes the Kaiju toward the sea, stopping at the shoreline and attacking Hammerjaw with a left hook and a straight right that knock out several of the monster's massive teeth. The Kaiju tries to fight back but is retaliated by the Jaeger, who knocks it flat on its back and begins a punishing ground-and-pound attack.[5]

In the process, Brawler Yukon raises its arms above its frame and prepares to deliver the final blow, but is disastrously interrupted by a system failure that breaks the pilots' neural connections and leaves the Jaeger completely offline. Caitlin Lightcap and Sergio D'Onofrio remain in the darkened Conn-Pod as they attempt to call for help over a dead radio, and the PPDC attempts to reroute the Jaeger's power sources to bring it back online, but to no avail.[5]

Hammerjaw immediately took advantage of the situation and landed a powerful headbutt on the Jaeger's midsection, knocking it to the ground and resulting in a shower of sparks and fragments of glass and metal. The Jaeger remained offline and dripping its black fluids like a waterfall of black blood.[5]

While the helicopters circled the scene, afraid of shooting and injuring the pilots, Hammerjaw continued to pulverize the Mark-1 and the PPDC command center discussed activating the self-destruct sequence to at least take the Kaiju along with the downed unit.[5]

When Marshal Stacker Pentecost is convinced that the two pilots may already be dead and that greater damage could be avoided with this sacrifice, he decides to press the button, but is interrupted by a scream.[5]

The details after this are not known, but it is known that despite the adversities, Brawler Yukon managed to survive and triumph over the Kaiju.[5][9]

Later Career[]

At some point between 2021 and 2024, the Jaeger is destroyed in combat by an unknown Kaiju.[3][4]

Features[]

Like all Mark-1 Jaegers, Brawler Yukon is powered by a nuclear reactor, which makes it resilient to EMP-based attacks.[10] About 200 feet tall[1], Brawler Yukon, unlike some of the future Jaegers, did not have a very humanoid structure. Its body is large and hunched with a large neck leading up to the Jaeger's small head. It has a huge dome-shaped armor plating around its shoulders, and long thin arms.

Being the prototype of what would be the Mark-1, Brawler Yukon has extremely simple armament, consisting only of blades attached to its arms and missile launchers on its back, capable of firing projectiles upwards like mortars with enough force to stun Category I Kaiju.[1]

Trivia[]

  • In 2015, NECA intended to produce an action figure for Brawler Yukon in their 2016 line of Pacific Rim action figures, but allowed their rights to the license to expire.[11][12][13][14]
  • In 2013, Travis Beacham stated that Lightcap and Sergio would continue to pilot Brawler Yukon for the duration of its service in the Kaiju War.[15] However, neither character is ever seen or mentioned in Tales From The Drift.
  • Travis Beacham initially said that Brawler Yukon is an American Jaeger[2], but 1 month later corrected himself saying that its prototype Jaeger status means it is not affiliated with any country.[16]
  • Brawler Yukon appears in Pacific Rim: The Mobile Game.
  • The page chronicling Brawler Yukon's battle against Hammerjaw was revealed as a preview of the Mechapedia in Final Breach's Kickstarter campaign and was removed without explanation after the goal was reached.[5]

Notes[]

  1. Although the source does not mention the city directly, the excerpt in which it narrates the shutdown of Brawler Yukon says: "All systems shut down as Caitlin Lightcap and Sergio D'Onofrio stood in their blackened Conn-Pod cockpit screaming, "mayday" into a dead commlink. The PPDC rerouted all available energy sources to get the mech back online, but to no avail. In an instant Vancouver's guardian had become a sitting duck."
