Diablo Intercept is a Mark-2 Chilean Jaeger. It was assigned to the Lima Shatterdome, the first Shatterdome in the Western and Southern Hemisphere with the role of defending areas from Medellin to Patagonia.[1]
History[]
The Living Sewer[]
On January 31, 2019, Diablo Intercept is deployed to Manta alongside Romeo Blue and Puma Real to intercept the Category I Kaiju Ceptid.[5][2]
The Jaegers fail to stop the Kaiju with long-range attacks, so Diablo Intercept decides to take the lead and engage Ceptid in close combat, which detonates itself and destroys the Jaeger, killing both pilots.[5][2]
Aftermath[]
The wreckage of Diablo Intercept is sent to Oblivion Bay[7] and soon after, world headlines are filled with panicked press pieces and Kaiju scaremongering resurfaces among the population, causing people to begin to question the development of the first Mark-5 and the Jaeger Program's ability to deal with the growing surge of the Kaiju threat.
Years after the end of the Kaiju War, the simulated battle that led to the fall of Diablo Intercept is used to train PPDC cadets, teaching the new generation of Rangers that sometimes the only way to save lives is to sacrifice oneself, and that the pilots of Diablo Intercept, even at the cost of their lives, successfully accomplished this mission.[8]
Features[]
Like all Mark-2 Jaegers, Diablo Intercept is powered by a nuclear reactor, which makes it resilient to EMP-based attacks.[9] It looks squat and powerful, with a Conn-Pod painted dark red.[5]
Diablo Intercept's weaponry is focused on setting Kaiju ablaze, featuring flamethrowers that protrude from its bulky arms and projectiles called "Hellbots," which consist of projectiles filled with a napalm-like substance that can cover their targets in flames.[5]
Trivia[]
- The fact that Diablo Intercept was the first Jaeger to be destroyed conflicts with the destruction of Victory Alpha in Pacific Rim: Tales From The Drift, indicating that the comic, or at least part of it, is non-canon.[10]
- According to Travis Beacham, the crew of Diablo Intercept is Chilean.[4]
- When he revealed all the Mark-2s on his Tumblr, Travis Beacham mistakenly listed Diablo Intercept as a Peruvian Jaeger.[11]
