Herc Hansen: "I know you, mate. We rode together before."
Raleigh Becket: "We did, sir. Six years ago. My brother and I. It was a three Jaeger team drop."
Herc Hansen: "That’s right, Manila."
—Herc and Raleigh about their fight against Gyakushu.

Gyakushu is a Category IV Kaiju that attacked Manila on December 16, 2019.[4][2][3]

Biology[]

Gyakushu is a massive Kaiju with a broad, heavily built body and a hunched posture. Its primary forelimbs are long and powerful, reaching the ground and ending in large, curved claws. From its shoulders extend four short bony projections that reinforce its upper frame. The creature's hind legs are shorter but sturdy, ending in feet with long claws. Beneath its torso, Gyakushu possesses a secondary pair of arms that emerge from the abdomen. These auxiliary limbs also touch the ground and end in oversized claws similar to those of the main forelimbs. Along its back lies a broad, blade-like plate that tapers into three small points. Behind this structure begins Gyakushu’s tail, which ends in a rigid, arrowhead-shaped bony blade.[4]

The creature's head is armored, featuring three eyes on each side, a mouth lined with protruding teeth, and two downward-pointing chin extensions. A thick, upward-projecting cranial growth rises from the forehead, forming a club-like structure.[4]

As seen in Kaiju such as Slattern, Trespasser, Knifehead, and Scunner, the tail and primary forearm bones display characteristic fleshless open gaps.[4]

The length of its limbs indicates that, like Leatherback, the Kaiju moves in a manner similar to a gorilla. The creature's most threatening weapon in combat appears to be its arrowhead-shaped tail, used to incapacitate its opponents and compared by Newton to a kind of prototype of Otachi's tail, indicating great maneuverability.[7]

History[]

Manila Incident[]

Gyakushu emerges from the Breach and makes landfall in Manila, Philippines, where it is confronted by the Chinese Mark-1 Horizon Brave, the American Mark-3 Gipsy Danger, and the newly launched Australian Mark-5 Striker Eureka.[4][6]

During a fierce battle, the Category IV manages to use its tail to pin up Horizon Brave and nearly ends the lives of its pilots, only to be killed at the last minute by combined strike from Gipsy Danger's I-19 Plasmacaster and Striker Eureka's Anti-Kaiju Missiles.[4][6]

Aftermath[]

The fight against Gyakushu served as a demonstration to the world of the superior strength and speed of the new Mark-5, with Chuck Hansen displaying his frustration over rumors of the Jaeger Program's suspension.[4]

In January 2025, a sample of Gyakushu's flesh was compared to that of Mutavore by Newton Geiszler, helping him conclude that Kaiju are clones of each other.[1] Later, during Otachi's attack, Newton sees the creature's tail functioning and recalls Gyakushu using its tail in Manila, concluding that it was only a draft, with Otachi's being a kind of final version.[7]

In 2035, Ferand Ocampa mentions Gyakushu alongside Hundun and Taurax, saying that the Kaiju would never be able to pay for what they did to the Philippines.[8]

Trivia[]

  • Clawhook is the seventeenth Kaiju to emerge from the Breach.[4]
    • It is the first known Category IV Kaiju.
    • It is the second Kaiju to attack the Philippines.
    • It is the fourth Kaiju to be killed by Gipsy Danger and the last before its confrontation with Knifehead, making it the last Kaiju killed by Yancy Becket.[2]
    • It is the first Kaiju to be killed by Striker Eureka.[3]
    • It is the second and final Kaiju to be killed by Horizon Brave.[4]
  • Despite being mentioned several times in the official novelization of the first film, Gyakushu is only referred to as "MN-19," with its name only being revealed with the release of Pacific Rim Uprising: Ascension.
  • During the film's opening, a news report can be seen about Kaiju excrement contaminating Manila. It is unknown whether this excrement comes from Gyakushu or Hundun.[9]
  • The original novelization consistently mentions that Gyakushu's tail is barbed,[6][7] something that is changed to an arrowhead in its design in the Mechapedia.[4]
  • Gyakushu's appearance reuses one of the discarded concept arts from the first film, created by Wayne Barlowe.
  • Travis Beacham had previously stated that the Jaeger piloted by Herc Hansen in the fight against Gyakushu was Lucky Seven[10] and that his co-pilot was Scott Hansen, stating that Striker Eureka had not yet been launched when the Kaiju attacked and that Scott was fired after the Mark-5's launch[11][12], however, Striker Eureka was launched on November 2, 2019, over 1 month before Gyakushu's attack.
  • "Gyakushu" (逆襲) means "counterattack" in Japanese.
