Onibaba is a Category II Kaiju.[1]
Biology[]
Onibaba is a crustacean-type Kaiju, whose silhouette resembles a Japanese temple.[note 1][4] Onibaba possesses four large legs, along with two thick claws. Two small, arm-like appendages that reside in Onibaba's thorax.
Onibaba also possesses a high crest above a large, symmetrical head that can withstand close range and energy based attacks. Onibaba is not openly hostile and rather passive; despite the damage it caused to the general area of Tokyo, it actively avoids combat with an enemy unless provoked. Even then, its attacks are primarily defensive rather than aggressive.[5]
History[]
2016[]
Onibaba attacks the city of Tokyo, laying waste to large portion of the city and killing millions. Military forces are sent in alongside the Mark I Jaeger, Coyote Tango. Onibaba is table to destroy the jets, leaving Coyote Tango to face the Kaiju alone.
Piloted by Stacker Pentecost and Tamsin Sevier, the Jaeger is able to corner Onibaba and kill it, preventing the death of a young Mako Mori.
2035[]
Years after the battle, Onibaba was used in the PRDC's combat simulator to train pilots, where it was scaled up in size and considered a high-difficulty foe. Simulator Onibaba successfully defeated Amara Namani and Suresh Khuran piloting Titan Redeemer[6]
Trivia[]
- According to the the novelization of Pacific Rim, Onibaba's claws can crush 50,000 pounds per square inch.[5]
- "Onibaba" means "demon hag" or "Ogre Grandma" in Japanese.[7]
- Where Onibaba was 57 meters tall in Pacific Rim, notably shorter than a jaeger, the simulated version was significantly taller, looming over Titan Redeemer.
- As with Slattern, Onibaba is never referred to by name in either of the Pacific Rim films.
