Art-striker-6

Concept art of the thermonuclear bomb attached to Striker Eureka.

Operation Pitfall[1][2] was a high-risk mission headed by Pan Pacific Defense Corps Marshal Stacker Pentecost.[3]

History

Following the closure of the Jaeger Program by the United Nations, Stacker Pentecost attempted to appeal to the council members to attack the Breach with what remained of their forces.[3] Though he was denied, Pentecost was prepared to follow through with his intentions without their assistance.[3]

Using their connections, the Russian Rangers, Sasha and Aleksis Kaidonovsky, were able to procure a thermonuclear bomb for use in the mission. The bomb (with a yield equivalent to 1.2 megatons of TNT) would be attached to the back of the Mark-5 Jaeger, Striker Eureka. Chuck and Herc Hansen were entrusted to deploy the bomb into the "throat" of the Breach.[3]

Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha and Gipsy Danger would act as a defensive perimeter against any incoming Kaiju attacks during the assault. The subsequent detonation of the bomb would cause the Breach to collapse, preventing the further incursion of Kaiju.[3]

Pacific Rim Themo Bomb

Detonation of the bomb near the Breach.

When a Double Event occurred in Hong Kong, China, two of the four primary Jaeger forces, Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha, were destroyed by two Category IV Kaiju, Otachi and Leatherback. Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka were then forced to proceed with the mission without any back up. They were initially overpowered by three Kaiju, Scunner, Raiju and Slattern; the latter of which damaged Striker Eureka's ability to deploy the bomb manually.[3]

Chuck and Pentecost self-detonated the bomb in an attempt to kill the final two Kaiju. However, Slattern survived with significant wounds. Gipsy Danger's Nuclear Reactor then became the bomb. After Gipsy Danger kills Slattern using its nuclear reactor and the remaining chain sword, the Jaeger entered the Breach and was self-detonated by Raleigh Becket. The destruction of the Jaeger closed the Breach, ending the war.

Raleigh Becket was able to escape the explosion as he floated back to earth, he and Mako Mori were then found by a team of rescue heli's. [3]
