Operation Pitfall[1][2] was a high-risk mission headed by Pan Pacific Defense Corps Marshall Stacker Pentecost.[3]

History

Following the closure of the Jaeger Program by the United Nations, Stacker Pentecost attempted to appeal to the council members to attack the breach with what remained of their forces.[3] Though he was denied, Pentecost would follow through with his intentions without their assistance.[3]

Using their connections, the Russian Rangers, Sasha and Aleksis Kaidonovsky, are able to procure a thermonuclear bomb for Pentecost to use in the mission. The bomb would be attached to the back of the Mark-5 Jaeger, Striker Eureka. Chuck and Herc Hansen were entrusted to deploy the bomb into the "throat" of the breach.[3]

Crimson Typhoon, Cherno Alpha and Gipsy Danger would act as a defensive perimeter against any incoming Kaiju attacks during the assault. The subsequent detonation of the bomb would cause the breach to collapse, preventing the further incursion of Kaiju.[3]

When a Double Event occurs in Hong Kong, China, two of four primary Jaeger forces, Crimson Typhoon and Cherno Alpha, are destroyed by two Category IV Kaiju, Otachi and Leatherback. Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka are forced to proceed with the mission without any back up. They are initially overpowered by three Kaiju, Scunner, Raiju and Slattern; the latter of which damages Striker Eureka's ability to deploy the bomb manually.[3]

Chuck and Pentecost self-detonate the bomb to kill the final two Kaiju. However, the explosion kills Scunner and critically wounds Slattern. Gipsy Danger's Nuclear Reactor then becomes the bomb. After Gipsy Danger kills Slattern using its nuclear reactor, the Jaeger enters the breach and is self-detonated by Raleigh Becket. The destruction of the Jaeger closes the breach effectively ending the war.[3]
