Shane was the leader of the mobile Bogan settlement.

History[]

Early Life[]

Prior to the Uprising War, Shane traveled to Clayton City and met a couple at a Chinese café. When the couple's daughter, Mei, is "stolen", Shane takes her in.[2]

Using the Drift, Shane fragments Mei's memories and implants false information with memory drives. Shane convinces Mei that he was as a family man that lost his wife and daughter and that he found her on the streets. With his tutelage, Shane raises Mei as a trained mercenary and killer in his Bogan faction.[3]

Pacific Rim: The Black[]

Meeting the Travis siblings[]

Shane observes silently as Mei returns from her scavenging expedition. Upon her return, Shane notices that Mei has brought along some individuals from outside their group. However, Shane's main concern is to gather information about the mission, so he asks Mei about the number of Kaiju eggs she managed to retrieve and the current status of the Kaiju. Mei informs Shane that she found 2 eggs and that the Kaiju is now deceased. Shane briefly glances at Taylor, Hayley, and bOy before questioning Mei if the newcomers are responsible for this outcome. Mei clarifies that it was unintentional and assures Shane that they pose no threat. Shane warmly welcomes the Travis group and instructs Rickter to provide them with food and clothing for bOy. Intrigued by the Travis group, Shane orders Mei to gather information and uncover any hidden motives they might have. He expresses his disappointment that their agreement with Ferno's team was compromised, as he had promised 4 eggs but only obtained 2. Mei assures Shane that they will accept whatever is offered and express gratitude. In response, Shane emphasizes the importance of avoiding any violent confrontations this time. Mei simply states that the decision is in their hands.

Black market Trade[]

The Dealer arrives at Bogan in a modified limousine equipped with hydraulics and oversized monster truck wheels. Upon reaching Bogan to exchange power cells and Jaeger parts for Shane's Kaiju eggs, which Mei and Rickter had collected on behalf of Ferno, Shane then goes up to the Dealer and notices that Ferno is absent this time, and only his "bootlicker" is present. After examining the Jaeger part, Shane comments that it is satisfactory but he doesn't see the "big-ticket items." Demarcus' henchmen open the trunk, revealing two fully charged Jaeger power cells, to which Shane responds with surprise, saying "good enough." Demarcus counters by mentioning that they are not cheap. Upon entering the house, Demarcus discovers only 2 Kaiju eggs instead of four. Two of Demarcus's men then aim their guns at Shane, who questions Demarcus about Ferno's intentions with the eggs, ruling out the possibility of consumption due to a past incident. Demarcus clarifies that Ferno intends to exchange the eggs with the Sisters of the Kaiju and emphasizes the requirement for four eggs, however, Shane highlights that the Kaiju is no longer alive, increasing the value of the two eggs. Despite this setback, Demarcus agrees to proceed with the trade and provides Shane with half the amount of power cells. However, Shane is dissatisfied, leading both groups to point their guns at each other. The situation escalates when a scuffle breaks out between Rickter and the Travis siblings, resulting in a gunfight. Eventually, Shane destroys the eggs but retains the components. He instructs Demarcus to inform Ferno that any retaliation will result in being fed to the Kaiju. Furthermore, Shane decides to let the sisters resolve their issues, compelling Demarcus to depart. Following this incident, Shane becomes furious and forcefully grabs Mei by the throat. He warns her that if Ferno survives, he will seek revenge because of her and her associates. After releasing her, Mei informs Shane that Taylor appears to be interested in a power cell, although she is uncertain of the reason behind this curiosity.

Interrogating Taylor[]

Shane inquires about the distance towards the west, and Taylor responds by indicating it is quite far. Shane then questions if it is in the mountains. Taylor confirms this, and Shane proceeds to make a remark, stating, "Did a 14-year-old girl and an idiot boy accompany you from the mountains?" Taylor affirms this statement, and Shane proceeds to ask Taylor about the whereabouts of their vehicle. Taylor informs him that they do not have one and inquires about the voices Shane keeps hearing. Shane dismisses the voices and asks Taylor how he managed to reach Meridian city. Taylor replies, saying that he took it one step at a time. Shane then asks Taylor if he believes he is clever. Meanwhile, Mei stands by the door, observing the situation. Mei reassures bOy and Hayley that if Taylor tells Shane the truth, he will survive. Shane then proceeds to interrogate Taylor using the Drift, delving into his memories until he discovers their possession of Atlas Destroyer. Satisfied with this revelation, Shane claims ownership of the jaeger, leaving Taylor incapacitated in the Drift.

Meridian City[]

Upon arrival at Meridian, Shane instructs everyone to refrain from using tents and only utilize essential equipment such as generators, power lines, and scanners. Mei concurs with Shane's instructions and informs him that they have spotted a bio mech nearby. Curious about Joel's whereabouts, Shane asks Mei about his location, which prompts her to go search for him. When Mei returns with Joel, Shane approaches him while he is inspecting the Jaeger and hands him a power cell, instructing him to make the Jaeger operational. Joel inquires about his co-pilot and gazes towards Mei. Mei declines, stating that she doesn't need his personal demons and he certainly doesn't need hers. Shane agrees with Mei's decision. However, Joel persists in trying to persuade Mei to drift with him, asserting that she knows him better than anyone else. Mei firmly responds that they asked, and she answered. Joel attempts to collaborate with other members of Bogan who lack Drift training, but all their efforts prove unsuccessful, resulting in Joel suffering neural damage. Meanwhile, the energy signature of the Jaeger catches Copperhead's attention, prompting it to head towards their location. Upon learning this information from Spyder, Shane forcefully grabs Taylor and throws him against a rock, questioning if he remembers the Kaiju that he failed to defeat. He then informs Taylor that the Kaiju is en route to finish the battle. Hayley suggests that they all evacuate, to which Taylor agrees, stating that Copperhead will devastate the camp and destroy the Jaeger. Taylor asks Shane to allow him and Hayley to pilot the Jaeger, but Shane refuses, insisting that only Hayley will be permitted to do so. Despite Taylor's objections, Shane brandishes his gun and asserts that he alone makes the decisions in Bogan. Mei volunteers to pilot the Jaeger, but she requires someone with actual Drift training. Shane argues that Taylor is unfit after their previous "mind meeting," and Mei acknowledges the state he is in. Shane orders Taylor to co-pilot Atlas Destroyer with Mei, despite Hayley’s protest that Taylor cannot endure another Drift, and insists that she should take his place. Mei informs Hayley that she is doing her a favor, as her mind is not a pleasant place to be during the Drift. Upon Drifting, Taylor's shock convinces him to stay and fight Copperhead. While they are initially successful, his lack of training and restraint causes a lack of sync. Their synchronization is incomplete, and when Taylor tries to fight the Kaiju, it removes and eats the right arm of the Jaeger. Taylor and Mei run Atlas into a minefield where Spyder detonates mines, which render the Kaiju unconscious.

Mei’s Betrayal[]

Shane confronts Mei regarding the damage inflicted upon Atlas, resulting in the loss of his only drift technician, six hundred mines, and the incapacitation of the sole Jaeger in The Black. Taylor intervenes to support Mei, disclosing that he initiated the altercation, leaving Mei with no alternative but to follow suit. In retaliation, Shane brandishes a firearm at Taylor, issuing a threat to shoot while expressing remorse for not turning away the Travis group when he had the opportunity. Inspired by Taylor's actions, Mei endeavors to defend them by explaining that she placed Taylor in the rig despite his unsuitability for drifting. She also reminds Shane that the Travis group sought assistance in Bogan, and he took everything they had, ultimately obtaining a Jaeger. Despite his initial reluctance, Shane eventually agrees to spare and banish the Travis group from Bogan, cautioning them to depart before sunrise or they’re dead.

Rickter expresses his disbelief to Shane about letting the Travis group go, but Shane clarifies that he never specified what would happen next after promising Mei they could leave Bogan. Shane then instructs Rickter to eliminate the Travis group. Mei overhears their conversation and confronts Shane about it. In an attempt to downplay her suspicions, Shane suggests that Rickter is simply ensuring they don't consider returning. He advises Mei to focus on Joel and reminds her that Copperhead is still searching for the Jaeger. Despite seemingly trusting Shane's explanation, Mei remains cautious of him. Shane then asks Mei to deliver a message to Joel: if the Jaeger isn’t fully operational by the end of the day, he’s dead.

Rickter catches up with the Travis group and informs them that they still have unresolved matters. Hayley positions herself in front of Taylor, who asks Rickter to leave them alone, reminding him of Shane's permission to depart. Rickter acknowledges this, but unexpectedly shoots bOy, leading to a struggle between the four individuals over the firearm. The Travis group manages to gain control, and fortunately, bOy remains unharmed. However, before they can delve deeper into the situation, Rickter regains consciousness and hears the sound of a gun being prepared to fire. Rickter tries to reason with the person holding the gun, but Mei arrives and successfully convinces Taylor to lower the weapon. Mei takes the gun and shoots Rickter, presumably ending his life. Amidst this chaos, Mei hears Shane's voice coming through Rickter's radio, questioning why it is taking so long to eliminate three kids and demanding Rickter's return to Bogan, thus confirming Mei's suspicions. Meanwhile, in Bogan, Shane grows frustrated when Rickter fails to report back. Unaware of Rickter's alleged demise, Shane sends a truck to locate him. He contacts Joel through the radio, but Mei interrupts, advising him to let Joel carry out his duties. Shane informs her that there has been no communication from Rickter for hours, to which Mei suggests that Rickter may be exercising caution due to the effects of drifting with an epileptic. Shane acknowledges that this does not change the current situation and states that Joel is no longer useful if he cannot repair the Jaeger.

Mei offers her help to Taylor, suggesting that they escape together. She sneaks him back to Atlas to repair it, as Joel is not mentally fit for the task. Upon discovering that Hayley and Boy have been captured again, Joel proposes that Taylor Ghost Drifts in order to pilot Atlas alone and rescue them. At first hesitant, Taylor eventually agrees, despite objections from Loa. Meanwhile, Shane orders his men to search for Taylor, while Mei attempts to stall by inquiring Shane about his thoughts on Taylor's reasons for coming back. Shane gives the obvious answer, stating that they want to steal "his" Jaeger. Taylor begins to Drift alone, using his last memory of ranger Herc Hansen, causing chaos among the Bogan encampment. As Shane notices the Atlas Destroyer powering up, he confronts Mei and accuses her of assisting their enemies. Mei admits her involvement, but when Taylor tries to kill Shane, she stops him and they rescue Hayley and Boy instead. Taylor also convinces Mei to leave Shane and join them. Exhausted from solo Drifting, Hayley and Mei pilot Atlas away from Bogan. After they stop, Taylor witnesses Shane remotely killing Joel as he recovers from the effects of Solo drifting.

Saving Brina[]

Shane makes the decision to pursue Mei and retrieve her along with the Jaeger. It takes him one day to catch up with Atlas, only to discover that Taylor and Mei are currently piloting it. Despite facing great difficulty, Taylor and Mei manage to defeat two Kaiju, but their victory is short-lived as three more Hybrids emerge and begin closing in on them. Meanwhile, outside of the Jaeger, Shane notices three members of the Sisters of the Kaiju giving commands to the Kaiju, instructing them to attack Atlas. In a surprise attack, Shane and Spyder take action against the Sisters. Shane successfully eliminates one of them, while Spyder incapacitates another using a taser. With only one Sister remaining, Shane confronts her with a knife, demanding that she call off the attack. However, the Sister defiantly refuses to comply with his demands. In response, Spyder utilizes the taser, effectively halting the Kaiju assault. Reflecting on the situation, Spyder comments to Shane about now having a hostage who turns out to be Hayley and Taylors mother. After Brina Travis is rescued from the Sisters of the Kaiju, Shane contacts Atlas Destroyer and offers the Travis siblings a deal: the Jaeger in exchange for Shane Drifing with their mother and freeing her mind. Shane attempts to get Mei to come back as well, but she tells him that if he wants really wants to be family, to do this without asking for anything in return. Spyder vouches for Shane's sincerity, telling Mei that this is no easy favor since Brina's mind is full of some real nastiness.

In the Jaeger's conn pod, Shane drifts with Brina with Loa attempting to warn him of the likely consequences of Drifting with a Kaiju-infected mind. Shane races through Brina's memories which are rapidly deleted around him before finally finding Brina in a memory of Haley's birth, earning her trust by using a secret that he had learned from Drifting with Taylor which only Taylor and Brina knew about. With the deletion closing in around them, Shane throws Brina through the exit, saving her, while his mind is deleted, killing him in the real world.

In the aftermath, a devastated Mei tells Spyder about Shane's death and Spyder realizes that Shane had always known that he wasn't going to survive. Spyder provides Mei with a data key that Shane had given to him before he left and reveals that it contains Mei's memories: Shane had never destroyed them, he had stored them. Knowing that he wouldn't be returning, Shane had ensured that Mei would get back what he'd taken from her.[4] Mei then buries Shane nearby with Spyder's help.[5]

The Divide[]

Shane was not physically seen, but Rickter mentioned him after he shot a Bogan soldier. He said that just because Shane's gone, doesn't mean no one's in charge.

When Hayley and Taylor picked up the scout tank, Shane was buried under the rocks with Brina Travis.

Personality and Traits[]

Shane was often known to be hardened, unforgiving and dry. He was also mostly cold, indifferent and callous towards most of the members of Bogan (Richter being the one who stands out among the rest) and wasn't particularly trusting of Taylor and Haley, questioning if they could be of use to his group. Despite his ruthless demeanor, Shane did have a bit of redeeming qualities as he stored Mei's memories rather than destroying them, and he likely planed on revealing to her the truth when he felt she was ready as well as looking after Spyder (who thought highly of Shane, despite his harshness toward the others). He was willing to help Hayley and Taylor free their Mom from the Sisters' control, despite knowing that the Drift could kill him (which it did). It's possible at one point, Shane could've been a good man and likely hated what the Kaiju did to the world, yet came to reluctantly accept the way things have become with Mei and Spyder being his only friends.
