Tortuga is the name of an unused Kaiju concept from the Pacific Rim draft script.[1]
Biology[]
Tortuga has a three-pronged mouth that opens like a flower and is armed with a tongue with a barbed tip that can tear through Jaeger armor that acts like a harpoon.[1]
Development[]
Tortuga plays a large part in the obscured history of Raleigh Antrobus and is instrumental in the death of his brother, Yancy. The details of the Kaiju and its battle with Coyote Tango are slowly revealed through the script through dream sequences and flashbacks shared by Felicity Kincaid and Raleigh. Near the climax of the script, the details of the fight with Tortuga are revealed proper.[1]
Tortuga battles Coyote Tango near the Santa Monica Pier. Throughout the battle, Tortuga has the upper hand on Coyote Tango, largely on account of a distracted Raleigh, preoccupied with envious thoughts of when he catches glimpses of Yancy's relationship with Felicity. When Coyote Tango moves to guard its lower region, Tortuga's advantage grows.[1]
With a crouch, the Kaiju launches itself at the Jaeger and uses its barbed tongue to pierce the Conn-Pod. The attack kills Yancy, and throws Raleigh into a blind rage that knocks the Kaiju off guard. Tortuga is beaten to a pulp by Coyote Tango until its body is rendered to nothing except gore.[1]
Trivia[]
- "Tortuga" is Spanish for "Turtle" or "Tortoise", and is the name of an island forming a part of Haiti.
